Three Brothers |
The crew assembled on the Chicken Run at 2.00 pm before clambering onto the Gannet. The usual checks were made before staring the engine and releasing the mooring ropes. Concern was expressed about the amount of diesel left in the tank.
The Gannet was taken over to the Three Brothers where the crew prepared for sailing. The small jib was attached and four reeves put in the main sail.
Two attempts were made before the Gannet was in position to make a front tow due to the wind catching the bow.
The tow was released when the boats were level with the racing buoys. By the time the Gannet came alongside the Three Brothers, the wind had blown us 20yds shoreward. A side tow was secured and the Three Brothers moved seawards until the bowsprit and jib sail had been raised. The tow was dropped and the main sail raised. Tacks of 180 and 70 degrees were made around the south bay and then into the North Bay.
The Gannet returned to the harbour to refuel and returned with the ice-creams!
At 5.30 pm the wind began to ease so the decision was made to return to the harbour. The Three Brothers was turned as we approached Sewerby and a course set for the harbour. When we were near the racing buoys the main sail was lowered and a side tow taken from the Gannet.
Both boats were moored securely by 6.30 pm
Crew members were: Albert Brownhill, Robert McCall, Ian Johnson, Paul Russell, Frank Bull, Dave Beaumont, Alan Dalton and Ian Thompson.
