The Pirate boat was available at 9.45 am to tow the Three Brothers out of the harbour. Ian Johnson had set the jib sail and lengthened the bow rope so the stern was against the harbour wall.

Two new members Colin Screeton and Steve Shone were invited aboard after paying their dues in the Harbour Museum. (The new alarm was set off because I did not know the password). The Three Brothers was pulled to the head buoy, after the crew had boarded, and the rudder was positioned.

The Pirate boat towed us out of the harbour, nearly to the racing buoy marker No.1, where the tow was released. The bowsprit was set and the jib sail run up, by which time our direction had altered from facing Flamborough Head to facing the south outfall buoy. The flat calm sea and very light breeze meant that very little headway was made after the main sail had been hoisted.

The gradual progress increased, as a light breeze sprang up, on our course towards the south sewerage buoy. After nearly 45 minutes we were in line between the outfall buoy and the shore pumping station. Ten minutes later we turned through the wind and approached the buoy from the seaward side.

The buoy was rounded and a course set for the harbour entrance. The new members took turns at the rudder until we were alongside the south harbour wall. The wind died just as we were approaching and the jib started to back as we turned to follow the wall round. The jib sail was lowered and the bowsprit pulled aboard as we moved across the entrance to the north wall. A line was attached to the wall before we lowered the main and sorted out the sails. The Pirate boat gave us a tow back to our berth, where the crew disembarked after tidying all the ropes.

The Three Brothers was moored and the dinghy rowed back to the racks at 12.45 pm.

An enjoyable slow sail.

Crew members – Colin Screeton, Steve Shone, Ian Johnson, Frank Bull, Mike Salisbury, Paul Russell, Albert Brownhill, Jack and Ian Thompson.
